Tom grew up poor in Hudson Falls during the Great Depression, and when his single mother couldn't afford to care for him, he was taken in by his Aunt Lillian. He survived because his neighbors fed him through their back window (and that's how he met their daughter, Cecilia Reed, who would later become his wife). After serving in World War II, Tom used the GI Bill to attend college, buy a home, and build a middle-class life as a public school teacher in Hadley-Luzerne for 40 years. From his grandfather, Dylan learned what stability looked like and what it means for a country to invest in its people. But growing up in South Glens Falls after NAFTA hollowed out parts of the North Country, he saw how much harder that promise became for families who did everything right and still fell behind. At 17, Dylan learned how quickly a medical bill could destabilize working families when he led the South High Marathon Dance — a 50-year hometown tradition that has raised millions for families facing healthcare crises. He'll never forget telling his third-grade teacher’s family their newborn's surgery would be covered. That reinforced a conviction that still drives him today: in a country this wealthy, basic security should not depend on luck. Dylan earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Public Administration from the University of Pennsylvania. While there, he fought to protect survivors of sexual violence and organized to raise wages for campus service workers. He studied under David Eisenhower, grandson of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who deepened his belief that public service demands independence and the courage to challenge concentrated power. After graduating, Dylan returned home and began a career building economic fairness and opportunity. He worked for a former Secretary of State and in local government, where he helped use public investments to hold corporations accountable. We live in one of the most beautiful places in the country, but too many people with power treat it like a resource to exploit instead of a home to protect. Corporations have dumped forever chemicals into our water, road salt has seeped into our lakes, and the damage to our lakes and rivers keeps getting worse. Congress must invest in climate resilience that protects our homes, farms, and roads across the Adirondacks and the Mohawk Valley. Storms are getting stronger, flooding is getting worse, and we need resources to deal with the damage. Our lakes and rivers deserve real protection from invasive species, and I'll support federal funding for boat inspections, decontamination stations, and programs that keep our water clean for generations. It’s time to stop pollution at the source, not just manage the damage. Congress must pass a national ban on forever chemicals and make polluters — not taxpayers — pay to clean up every drop of contamination left across our region. We need federal investment to rebuild and maintain our trails, protect our forests, and strengthen the watersheds our communities depend on. You should be able to hike a trail, hunt our game, and fish our rivers without worrying about contamination or corporate abuse. Because the Adirondacks and the Mohawk Valley aren’t for sale.

<h2>Protecting the Adirondacks and Mohawk Valley</h2>

Published in the Plattsburgh Press-Republican Last week’s announcement that Netflix plans to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery for over $70 billion, and Paramount launching a hostile counter-takeover, should face aggressive scrutiny. If approved, either merger will create a corporate giant with massive control over what Americans watch, what they pay, and, in some cases, which news reaches their homes. Entertainment makes headlines, but Netflix, Paramount, and Warner aren’t the only ones using well-connected lobbyists to sweet talk regulators.&nbsp;The same monopoly playbook is being deployed across every essential part of our economy. And in rural America, it means something more destructive: abandonment when we are no longer profitable enough.&nbsp;I’m running for Congress in New York’s 21st District to take a sledgehammer to the monopolies that keep selling working families out just so Wall Street keeps getting richer. When everything costs more, we have less freedom. Paychecks that used to cover the basics now fall short, which leaves families to make impossible choices: heat our homes or buy groceries, fill our prescriptions or fix the car. That isn’t the result of a free market; it’s the result of corporate power without accountability.Look no further than healthcare. UnitedHealth Group dominates health insurance, hospital systems, physician practices, and pharmacy benefits, controlling nearly every point where we pay for care. When one corporation has that much power, it sets the price and we have no other options. At the same time, private equity firms buy up rural hospitals, load them with debt, and shut them down when returns don’t satisfy. Here in NY-21, doctors have warned about an impending 114-mile medical desert as a result of our broken health care system. That’s a question of life and death, and it’s why I’ll go to Congress and use its anti-monopoly powers to break up healthcare mergers that price us out of staying alive.&nbsp;Or look at your utility bill. In much of rural New York, families have no real choice of energy provider. Monopoly utilities like National Grid keep raising rates while infrastructure fails, while executives collect million-dollar bonuses. During long North Country winters, we can’t shop around energy options – we just end up paying more. That’s not freedom. Congress should take on price gouging with its teeth, break up exclusive service territories, and ban utility company executives from receiving bonuses when rates rise faster than inflation. Where monopoly utilities fail, we need public utilities, municipal providers, and rural co-ops that answer to customers instead of shareholders.&nbsp;Then there’s our food. Just four companies control nearly all meat processing in the United States: Tyson, JBS, Cargill, and National Beef. They set the prices our farmers receive and the prices North Country families pay at checkout. Farmers are locked into one-sided contracts while grocery prices soar and Big Agriculture posts record profits. Instead of spending billions in tax dollars to patch over the damage caused by consolidation, Congress should use fair trade agreements to open markets where they can compete.Congress lets all this happen because the same corporations driving up your costs are funding their campaigns. For example, one of the top contributors to Elise Stefanik’s campaign is Apollo Global Management, one of the largest private equity firms. They use the money they squeeze out of working families to buy political influence that protects their control. That’s why I refuse corporate PAC money. You can't fight monopolies while taking their checks.&nbsp;As a White House trade official, I served our country to protect American workers and farmers against a rigged economy. I’ve seen firsthand how corporate consolidation hollows out local economies like ours.When companies have to compete for your business, they lower prices to win you over. Right now, they don't have to compete, and they jack up prices because you have nowhere else to go.Congress has the tools to actually make life affordable. Enforce the Packers and Stockyards Act from 1921 to rein in the meatpacking giants and rebuild regional supply chains where farmers get fair prices. Block further healthcare mergers that restrict access to lifesaving care. Break up exclusive utility territories. The laws exist, but Congress just needs the courage to use them.I’m running to be that courage. We deserve an economy where hard work pays off, and the basics are affordable. Where competition is real, costs are fair, and families have the freedom to build a life and plan for the future. That’s worth fighting for, and it's time someone did.

<h4>Rural Voters Must Stand Up to Monopolies to Lower Costs</h4>

It’s time to restore the dignity of work. Right now, we’re working harder than ever but our paychecks aren’t keeping up. I’m running for Congress because your full-time job should pay enough to raise your family. That’s why I support the Raise the Wage Act, which would incrementally increase the federal minimum wage from $7.25 to $17 by 2030. Congress must also do more to crack down on price gouging and end this administration’s reckless tariffs that have increased your everyday costs. I support strengthening supply-chains here at home so we’re less dependent on other countries, and I support fair trade deals that serve American workers, not a race to the bottom that benefits CEOs somewhere else. Any company that ships jobs overseas should pay back every tax break they received, and I will support the PRO Act so your right to join a union is never questioned. I also believe Congress must invest in the future of work. We need to create jobs that can’t be easily replaced with artificial intelligence. When companies automate to cut labor costs, those gains should go to workers through higher wages and profit sharing, not only CEOs and shareholders.

I believe in the dignity of your work. You deserve a full-time job that pays enough to raise a family, to join a union if you want, and retire with Social Security you can count on. I've served our country to defend American workers, take on rising costs, and protect our national security against China. Elise Stefanik sided with her billionaire donors and greedy corporations to make life unaffordable. Reckless tariffs at the northern border are hammering our families, farmers, and small businesses, keeping wages low and hollowing out our local economies. It's time to take care of our own. I'll invest in manufacturing here at home, strengthen supply chains so we're not dependent on other countries, and hold companies accountable so they pay our tax dollars back if they ship jobs overseas. I'll crack down on price gouging and raise the minimum wage to grow America’s middle class.

<h2>Living Wages</h2>

I grew up in the pews of St. Michael's in South Glens Falls, where I learned the Book of Isaiah calls us to be repairers of the breach. That means welcoming people seeking refuge and treating them as our neighbors. My family has been in the North Country for 7 generations: Irish immigrants two centuries ago and Italian immigrants through Ellis Island in the early 1900s, both looking for a fairer future in America. I know that similar stories are woven through families and towns across NY-21. Right now, our immigration system is broken. Billions of dollars fund corrupt contracts and raids rip apart families who have lived here legally for years, worked here, and paid taxes here. None of this makes anyone here safer or the North Country more secure. It's just expensive cruelty and political theatre. Congress must pass comprehensive reform with a clear, achievable pathway to citizenship for legal migrants, and we must hire more judges and asylum officers to restore accountability. We can invest in smart security at the southern border, eliminate wasteful spending, stop handing out $50,000 signing bonuses to new hires, and end construction on a detention facility in Plattsburgh. Instead, I support fully funding Custom Border Patrol at our northern border and reopening 24-hour crossings at Chateauguay, Overton Corners, Rouses Point, and Trout River.&nbsp;&nbsp; My commitment is to honor both the law and the humanity of the people who seek a better life here, just as my family once did. We repair the breach by remembering that welcoming the stranger is not only a moral command — it is the story of America itself.&nbsp;

Glens Falls, NY – Today, Dylan Hewitt announced he is suspending his campaign for Congress in New York’s 21st Congressional District, and released the following statement:&nbsp; "Our campaign began because the people of NY-21 deserve a real fighter: someone unbought by AIPAC, billionaires, and corporations; someone willing to take on the monopolies driving up grocery, healthcare, and utility costs; and someone with the spine to stand up to Washington’s corruption and end another illegal war.&nbsp; "Over the last year, I have been honored to travel across Upstate New York, learn from families here, and organize alongside them. The hardworking people I have met know their self-worth, think for themselves, and take pride in their independence — and they rightfully reject anyone running for office who says otherwise.&nbsp; "The truth is, campaigns are expensive. They run on money and access. And in a system like this, campaigns that challenge power are expected to run without it. I was not the establishment’s handpicked Democrat in this race, nor am I independently wealthy, but I’m proud we built a true grassroots campaign that refused to play by the same old playbook. As this quarter came to a close, the financial reality became clear, and after conversations with my family and team, I have made the difficult and painful decision to suspend my campaign for Congress.&nbsp; "But ending our campaign does not change what we are up against. National Grid is driving up our heating bills. Masked ICE agents are moving into St. Lawrence County. Hospitals are closing and laying off union workers. Our tax dollars are being used to bomb schools abroad, rather than paying our teachers a living wage.
